After 36 years at the highest level, working with brands like the Triple M Network, KISS92 Singapore, and Benztown, I’ve learned one thing for sure: Great imaging isn’t about me; it’s about making the station sound bloody good.

 

The key? It’s not just about the audio, it’s about the relationship.

 

I take the time to understand your station’s brand, your challenges, and what you want to sound like.
I don’t deliver what I think will make me look good, I deliver what’s right for you.

 

Sure, I’ve got the tools. I’ve worked on contests, shows, stunts — even a promo that sent a listener into space.
But the real magic? Knowing when to go hard, and when to pull right back.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some bloody talented people over the years, jocks, PDs, and some of the sharpest imaging producers in the game. Some were mentors, some were colleagues, and plenty were producers I hired myself. I’ve picked up tips, tricks, and tools from all of them.
 

But these next few shaped how I think about radio. These are the ones who made me the producer I am today.

Jeff Thomas - The art of the promo

When Jeff hired me at Triple M, he didn’t just hand me a job, he taught me how to make a promo work. Not just sound big but actually connect. He taught me that the real magic isn’t about showing off, it’s about making people feel something- excitement, anticipation, whatever the story needs.
 

I still think about those lessons every time I open a session.

Where I learned the craft...

David Kessels - The Craft & The Standards

Kessels took what Jeff taught me and sharpened it. He wasn’t just about the tricks, he was about the standards. He made me a better producer, but more than that, a better radio person.

His mantra was simple: never drop your pants, and never shy away from standing up for the work.

I still hear that voice when I’m building a promo, reminding me that every second matters, every decision counts, and the job isn’t done until it’s right.

The Programming Mindset - Dowse, Campbell, Cornell & Daisy

Working alongside Programming Minds like Phil Dowse, Duncan Campbell, Lee Cornell, and the late great David “Daisy” Day taught me the most important thing: it’s not about the tricks, it’s about the message.

These blokes taught me to think like a programmer. Is the message clear? Are we telling the right story? Does the imaging actually serve the station, or is it just noise?

Whether it’s a breakfast show promo, a music positioning statement, or a late-night sweeper, I still apply what I learned from them. Craft’s one thing, but getting the message right is everything.
